Frnkiero and the cellabrations @ Newcastle 04/20
And now for something a little different. My blog is mainly about Japanese music.... however, england rarely receives bands playing live here, unless its at London. I actually cannot get to London due to circumstances, but i do see some amazing American/European bands in Newcastle/Scotland.
Last night i managed to see one of my biggest idols who i've actually loved since i was 5/6 (which was a long time ago). Frank Iero and his solo project 'FrnkIero andthe Cellabrations' (yes thats how its written) played at the o2 Academy in Newcastle with the support of an Irish pop-punk band called Axis Of, an American solo artist named The Homeless gospel choir and a British grunge band called Milk Teeth (sounds like a Japanese band/label actually). Safe to say, the show was amazing.....so i guess i'll just blog a little more about it.
Starting the show off was the independent band from Dublin, Ireland, called Axis Of. This band is a trio composed of Nial, Ewen and Gibb... -he has a nice beard. The band releases their 'Heavy pop-punk-ish' album 'The Mid Brea Inn' sound under the indie record label Smalltime America. You can get your copy here. (availible as 12" vinyl, CD, or just a Digital LP)
The photo's turned a little blurry as the band were supper lively from start to finish
Second band on the agenda was a punk solo artist from Pennsylvania called Derek who preforms under the name 'The Homeless Gospel Choir'. THGC supported FrnkIero andthe Cellabrations during their American tour and was asked to support during the EU tour as well. Dereks stage appearance was quite confusing to start with -what do you expect from an american man, with an acoustic guitar, shorts and a funky t-shirt? Well apparently you should expect a 'F#@king political song'. The set was amazing. Roughly 8 songs of very politcal and politically incorrect lyrics thats had the audience laughing, 'aww-ing' and clapping along. I honestly have nothing bad to say about this man.
Derek also happens to be a genuine all round nice guy!
check out a song i recorded from that night
Unfortunately i was in a lot of pain throughout the concert and it continued to get worse throughout the third band which played. Again, Milk Teeth were the opposite to what i expected of them. Milky Teeth sound like a Japanese gyaru brand name, or a female fronted indie J-rock band, however they proved to be more 90s grunge-like (from what i could hear). The sound levels were a little off and we could barely hear the lead vocals even from where we were standing.
No photo's of this band though ....
Last but no least was the main act themselves: Frnk iero andthe Cellabrations. By this time, i had already made my escape to the back where i could actually breathe and move (aka. the back).
It wasnt a very good view back there but you could still hear the music as if you were sitting on the stage next to them. We were downstairs by the last 2 encore songs and the ceiling was actually denting from the amount of jumping coming from above.
It would be an under-statement to say that this was an amazing gig
